Smart Seoul 2015 project – provides a best practice guide to the construction and operation of a smart city. The project started in 2011.
What is a smart city? A concept for a city combining digital, cyber and eco goals that provide an improvement on the functionality and structure of the city using information and communication technology. Seoul has been at the forefront of world city technology for over a decade but the difference with the Smart Seoul 2015 project is that it is designed to improve the quality of life of the city citizens in an ongoing way rather than just be new technology applied to old infrastructure. Some examples of the Smart City 2015 initiatives include: · Free public WI-FI · Device Donation · Device accessibility for vulnerable groups · Embedded fibre optic cable in the subways, public buildings & offices · Smart work Centres – employees can work closer to home by checking in to a satellite work centre that is linked electronically to the main office · Continuous Community Mapping · Smart Metering for utilities like electricity – aiming to reduce power consumption · U-Seoul Safety Service monitoring vulnerable citizens combining devices, CCTV and location based services · Disclosure of Government Data to the private sector to encourage innovation that will benefit the public · State of the Art public transport facilities · Virtual Store · Technology to replace traditional communications such as school newsletters |
