Location and population
Seoul is the capital of South Korea and is located in the Southern half of the Korean Peninsula in Eastern Asia. Geographic location 37.5667° N, 126.9667° E, Population 10+ million 24 million in the Seoul National Capital Area (Korean pop. 49 million) Area 605.2 km². Terrain Mountainous with coastal plains Urban Seoul Seoul is a very densely populated city covering a large area, 605 km2 with high rise apartments for residential accommodation and high rise office buildings. There is a green belt around the perimeter of the building that was set up in 1970 and it was designed to stop expansion of the densely populated area that is highly built up. Continuing increased growth has lead to the urban sprawl outside the green belt with suburbs and small metropolitan area or satellite cities. Strategic urban planning has not kept up with the fast growth in Seoul. Climate Seoul has a sub tropical climate with contrasting seasons with cold dry winters with temperatures below zero degrees and snow and hot wet summers with temperatures going as high as 35 degrees. The humidity throughout the year stays between 60% and 80% on average and Seoul has more rainy days in summer, 17 days on average in July, than winter, on average 7-10 days are rainy. |
